70% in 15-17 age group have got their 1st Covid vaccine shots | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: More than 70% of youngsters in the 15-17 age group are now covered with at least the first dose of Covaxin, indicating that a majority of eligible adolescents have taken the jab. A total of around 7.4 crore adolescents are estimated to be in this age group.
Total vaccinations among youngsters have picked up again since the last two weeks after administration of the second dose started from January 30, CoWin data shows. However, the coverage of second dose continues to be low with only 1.5 crore adolescents aged 15-17 years fully vaccinated so far.
Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya appealed to all those in this age group, who are eligible for vaccination, to get inoculated at the earliest.
“Young India further strengthening the world’s largest vaccination drive. Over 70% of youngsters between 15-17 age group have received their first dose of Covid vaccine,” the minister said.
Officials said that the slowdown in coverage of the second dose could be because many people, including youngsters, getting infected with Omicron in January – immediately after receiving their first shot – which may have delayed their second dose schedule by three weeks.
