ahmed: Rape rate highest in India as women don’t wear hijab: Karnataka Congress leader | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing hijab controversy in Karnataka, state Congress leader Zameer Ahmed on Sunday said that India records a high number of rape cases because women don’t wear hijab.
“Hijab means ‘Parda’ in Islam … to hide the beauty of women … women get raped when they don’t wear Hijab,” said Ahmed, when asked about what he thought of Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan‘s statement that “Hijab is not essential to Islam”.
“I don’t understand why he (Arif Mohammad Khan) said that … Hijab is Gosh-e-Parda in Islam. Maybe, he (Khan) doesn’t have a woman or a girl in his house. I am not sure. If he had a woman or girl in his house, he would have known,” Ahmed added.
“Hijab protects the beauty of a girl. It hides her beauty,” he said, adding: “Today in India, I believe, the rape rates are highest. What’s the reason? Because women are not under gosh-e-parda (Hijab).”
A few days ago, Karnataka BJP MLA M P Renukacharya sparked a similar controversy when he said that “rape cases are increasing as some dresses worn by women excite men”.
The joint session of the Karnataka Legislature that will begin from Monday is likely to be rocked by the ongoing Hijab row and related law and order situation in the state.
The row has already taken political colour, as the ruling BJP stood strongly in support of uniform related rules followed by educational institutions, calling the headscarf, a religious symbol, while the opposition Congress has come out in support of Muslim girls. Both parties have even blamed each other for the issue being escalated into a major controversy.
