Centre approves Rs 26,275 cr scheme for continuation of police modernisation | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The government has approved continuation of its umbrella scheme for modernisation of police forces for five more years from 2020-21 to 2025-26, with a Central outlay of Rs 26,275 crore for all relevant sub schemes aimed at modernising and improving functioning of police forces of the states and Union territories.
The extended scheme makes provisions for internal security, law and order function, adoption of modern technologies by the police, assistance to states for narcotics control and strengthening the criminal justice system by developing a robust forensic set up in the country.
While the Central outlay for reimbursement of security-related expenditure for Jammu and Kashmir, insurgency-hit areas of the north-eastern states and Left-wing extremism-affected states has been fixed at Rs 18,839 crore, Rs 4,846 crore has been earmarked for the scheme for modernisation of state police forces .
With the ‘national policy and action plan’ for combating Left wing extremism bringing in good results in that LWE violence has declined drastically, six LWE-related schemes with a Rs 8,689-crore Central outlay have been approved to carry forward the accomplishments and consolidate the gains. These schemes include the special Central assistance to most-affected LWE districts & districts of concern.
To develop operationally independent high-quality forensic sciences facilities in the states and Union Territories for aiding scientific and timely investigation through modernization of resources, a central scheme for modernisation of forensic capacities with an outlay of Rs 2,080.50 crore has been approved.
For raising of India Reserve Battalions/Specialised India Reserve Battalions, a Central outlay of Rs 350 crore has been approved. Also, the provision of Rs 50 crore for the Central sector scheme for assistance to states & Union Territories for narcotics control, has been continued.
