BAGALKOT/MANGALURU: Amid the hijab row in Karnataka, pictures and videos of students of two primary schools offering “namaz” in the classroom in Dakshina Kannada and Bagalkot districts have surfaced. One video, which went viral on Friday, is said to have been shot at a government primary school at Ankathadka, Dakshina Kannada, and another at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad School in Bagalkot.
The issue was resolved at the Dakshina Kannada school on Saturday, but it continues to linger in Bagalkot. Kadaba government higher primary school headmistress Jalaja told TOI that the parents of the children who offered namaz in classrooms attended the school development and monitoring committee (SDMC) meeting on Saturday. They agreed that such instances will not recur in the school, she said, adding: “All parents said their wards will not perform any such religious activities in the school.”
Puttur block education officer Lokesh C, who was part of the meeting, said parents decided to focus on academic activities and stay united. They agreed to cooperate with the SDMC to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the school.
Srishail Biradar, deputy director of public instruction, said students of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad school offered namaz on Friday during lunch break without the knowledge of teachers.
