icmr: 93% of Covid labs score over 80% in ICMR’s quality check | India News – Times of India

PUNE: In a quality assessment by the ICMR, 891 out of 953 RT-PCR labs that conduct Covid tests hit a passing score of 80% or over, scientists of the apex medical research body told TOI. They said the results underscore the levels of accuracy and correct result interpretation within India’s vast Covid-testing network.
Experts involved in the assessment said the labs that failed to reach the cut-off score will need close follow-ups to ensure that the quality of their RT-PCR testing improves. Dr Nivedita Gupta, head of virology at ICMR, New Delhi, said: “When a quality assessment of labs is done, they are given coded SARS-CoV-2 samples for RT-PCR tests. The five samples provided for tests to the labs differed in their CT values: three had high-to-low CT values, while two samples were negative. The labs then tested the samples at their end and fed the results on the central portal at ICMR. The results were then decoded by the ICMR team to estimate the labs’ performance.”
“Over 93% labs achieving a passing score is a commendable performance,” Dr Gupta said.
