SC’s Pegasus panel receives 10 more phones for forensic test | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: After a fresh appeal through advertisements in various newspapers on February 3 seeking more depositions, the panel appointed by the Supreme Court to probe the Pegasus spyware case is learnt to have received at least 10 more mobile phones for forensic examination, taking the total number of devices deposited with it so far to 12.
However, it was not clear if the 10 phones deposited since February 3 include those of the seven accused in the Elgar Parishad case. A special NIA court had asked the agency to submit phones of the seven accused to the SC panel after they had approached the apex court panel alleging that their phones too were infected by the spyware.
Since last week, the probe panel headed by former SC judge Justice R V Raveendran has recorded depositions of at least two more people, including Prof David Kaye who teaches law at University of California and a former UN special rapporteur for freedom of opinion and expression.
The panel is expected to recommend enactment or amendment, if needed, to existing laws on surveillance of citizens and matters related to cybersecurity. The apex court had asked it to recommend if the existing mechanism to raise grievances by citizens is adequate.
