gandhinagar: Gujarat police rescue 15, including two-year-old girl, abducted by travel agents | India News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Gandhinagar police have freed 15 people by dismantling an operation in which travel agents abducted vulnerable targets and tortured them for money.
Some of them had been held captive in Delhi and Kolkata for the past three months. Those rescued include a two-year-old girl from Ahmedabad and others from Gandhinagar and Mehsana.
Police officers said family members of one of those abducted had approached Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel for redress last week. Patel instructed state home minister Harsh Sanghavi to have a rescue mission launched.
Police learnt that two couples had been confined to a hotel near the Delhi airport while 11 others were locked up in houses and hotels in Kolkata. A team of Gandhinagar Police along with the special cell of Delhi Police raided the hotel in Delhi on Friday and rescued the two couples. The 11 in Kolkata were released immediately by abductors.
A police officer said one of the survivor’s relatives had been sent to Russia by Patel earlier, so the family trusted him. To go to Canada, the people gave the agents up to Rs 30 lakh per person; while some gave more. The agents sent people to Delhi first. Subsequently, they were taken to places in Delhi and Kolkata. They were all confined and tortured. They were forced to tell their families that they had been detained in Canada and needed money to pay authorities. The agents extorted at least Rs 3.7 crore from the survivors’ families.
