Jolt to SKM as two poll candidates withdraw, one pledges support to AAP | India News – Times of India

BATHINDA: In a setback for Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, the political front of some Punjab farm unions, two of its candidates have withdrawn their candidature from the assembly polls.
Jaskaran Singh Buttar, SSM candidate from Bathinda district’s Rampura Phul assembly segment, retired from the field and announced his support for Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday. The other candidate, from Mansa, Gurnam Singh Bhikhi, too, retired from the field on Sunday. Bhikhi is associated with the Punjab Kisan Union.
Explaining his last minute decision, Buttar told TOI: “No one from SSM supported me and they left me alone to carry out the campaign. As I was new to electoral politics, I failed to take my campaign forward. As people have high hopes from AAP, which is capable of providing an honest government, I decided to withdraw from the field and provide support to AAP.”
Earlier, in spite of their tie-up with SSM, the CPI and CPI(ML) Liberation fielded candidates on their own symbols. The struggle that SSM is facing to keep its flock together has many of their supporters worried, especially as the major farm groups in Punjab made their stance against electoral politics very clear to the front led by senior farm leader Balbir Singh Rajewal.
