bjp: Modi flags vaccination success to turn Covid handling into a plus | India News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s stress on the rigorous vaccination drive undertaken against Corona pandemic during an election rally in Sitapur has turned the spotlight on BJP aggressive attempts to thwart opposition attempts to stoke the narrative of the saffron dispensation faltering in management of pandemic that claimed thousands of lives in UP since its outbreak in early 2020.
The PM struck the chord by asking the people at the rally whether they had been given “vaccine for free”. He categorically drew a contrast with the foreign countries where vaccination was done at “a high cost.” “The vaccination drive against Covid was significant and had a larger outreach than other vaccination programmes which were conducted in the country since independence,” he said. Modi especially mentioned how rural areas were deprived of the vaccination process in the early days. This was not the case with the Covid vaccination, he said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also been reminding voters how the opposition leaders were invisible during the peak of the pandemic and it was only the BJP government and workers who stood by them. “Ask these netas from SP, BSP and Congress where they were during the pandemic? The double engine government worked to tame it. It has overcome the virus forever now,” he said at a rally in Hamirpur.
Experts said that the BJP has been countering the opposition which has been seeking to put the ruling saffron dispensation in a spot, especially after the rampaging second Corona wave, that saw people facing shortage of oxygen and inadequate hospitalisation. The BJP found itself on a backfoot amid reports of Covid inflicted dead bodies being thrown in the rivers and even buried underground.
BJP sources said that the Yogi Adityanath government sensed the crisis and fast tracked projects vis–a-vis the oxygen supply. At the same time, the vaccination process was speeded up by wheeling out the large medical and health organisational machinery — that even reached the far flung areas. The state government also resorted to deployment of ASHA workers besides a close vigilance on movement of people in the urban and rural areas.
Records show that vaccination began in Uttar Pradesh on January 16, 2021 and the state is leading the country with the maximum doses administered. According to reports, a total of over 23 crore doses of the vaccine have been administered till now.
According to the data from the state health department, 14,23,54,400 people have got their first dose in the state and among them 8,57,49,721 their second dose as well. Also 3,85,665 precautionary doses have been administered to health workers, frontline workers and people above 60 years of age since January 10.
