Singer dies days after refusing Padma award | India News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Geetashree Sandhya Mukherjee, the veteran singer who made every romantic at heart yearn for never-ending travels in togetherness with ‘Ei path jodi na sesh hoy’, passed away at a city hospital on Tuesday, reports Priyanka Dasgupta. She was 90 and had been hospitalised with Covid a couple of weeks ago.
The singer suffered a sudden cardiac arrest around 7. 30pm. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Her departure creates an eternal void in our world of music and in the hearts of millions of her followers here and in the diaspora. . . . She used to be the moving spirit in our Sangeet Akademi. ” Her death was condoled among others by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The passing away of Gitashree Sandhya Mukhopadhyay Ji leaves us all extremely saddened. . . ,” the PM said.
On January 25, the singer refused the Padma Shri. “I have never run after awards. . . . The love of my listeners is my greatest award,” she had told TOI. Two days later, she was hospitalized.
