SP behind attack, says SP Singh Baghel while MSY kin terms it stunt; cops book 27 | India News – Times of India

AGRA: Mainpuri police booked two identified and 25 “unidentified” persons on Wednesday for an alleged attack on theconvoy of Union minister of state SP Singh Baghel. The minister was accorded ‘Z’ category security on February 11. The BJP MP from Agra is contesting elections against SPchief Akhilesh Yadav fromMainpuri district’s Karhal.
He accused SP workers of beinginvolved in the attack. Baghel sustained minor injuries after his convoy was allegedly attacked with stonesand sticks while he was returning after campaigning inthe area on Tuesday evening. Two of the accused wereidentified as Umakant Yadavand Vinod (who goes by hisfirst name only), localresidents of Nagla Badha village in Karhal block. Theywere arrested. Baghel told TOI that the incident took place at roughly7. 45 pm. “I was heading to Karhal to meet party workers. One of the attackers identified himself as Umakant Yadav. He asked me why I was contesting polls against his leader, ‘because of whom’ I became an MP,” he said. He alleged that goons chanted “Akhilesh bhai- ya, zindabad” and opened fire at his convoy. He said he sustained minor injuries on his right hand and several of his vehicles were damaged.
Deputy chief minister of UP Keshav Prasad Maurya, who earlier addressed a public meeting in Mainpuri, tweeted and alleged, “The attack on the Union minister’s convoy shows the true character of SP. Rajya Sabha MP Geeta Shakya was also attacked a day earlier. Strict action will be taken. ”
However, former SP MP from Mainpuri, Tej Pratap Yadav, grand-nephew of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, said, “This is a political stunt. No attack happened. Baghel has been lying and claiming fictitious attacks on him for the past one week. ” He claimed that the minister is trying to “change the narrative as he knows he is losing the poll”.
Additional superintendent of police in Mainpuri, Madhuban Singh, said, “An FIR has been registered. ”
He claimed that the Union minister was passing through Atikullapur village when Umakant Yadav and Bittu, along with several unidentified persons, attacked his convoy. “An inquiry is on and the law and order situation is under control,” he said.
