NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on Friday urged the police to reclaim its social legitimacy and public trust by breaking nexus with the political executive.
The CJI asked the police and all other institutions to stand by ethics and integrity.
“People hesitate to approach police in times of despair. Its image is tarnished due to corruption, excesses, lack of impartiality and close nexus with the political class,” the CJI said according to news agency ANI.
“Often police officers complain of being harassed after regime change,” he added.
CJI Ramana outlined lack of infrastructure and manpower, inhuman conditions at lowest levels, lack of modern equipment, questionable methods of procuring evidence, officers failing to abide by the rulebook and lack of accountability of officers as some of the issues adversely affecting the policing system.
