19-year-old Indian Prodigy D. Gukesh pulled off a stunning victory against the world champion Magnus Carlsen in the round 6 of ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament on Sunday in a classical chess format for the first time in his career.
Carlsen played white and was dominating for much of the game putting relentless pressure on Indian Prodigy D Gukesh. However, Gukesh defended with an outstanding durability and precision.
The Key moment came at move 52 when Carlsen miscalculated the knight’s move giving Gukesh enough of an opening to gain momentum and domination. From there on D Gukesh played with accuracy, eventually forcing world champion Magnus Carlsen to resign on 62nd move after exhausting all defensive resources.
After resigning, Magnus Carlsen visibly reacted by clenching and slamming his fist on the table and exiting the arena out of frustration. In contrast, Gukesh quietly celebrated his career-defining victory with his coach, Grzegorz Gajewski by giving him a celebratory fist bump before being taken to Studio for interviews at the venue.
“There was nothing much I could do, I just had to make the most of it” Gukesh commented after the match. With humorous way he added “ninety-nine out of hundred times, I would’ve lost. It was a lucky day for me”
The pair had met earlier in the tournament’s opening round where Magnus emerged victorious, showcasing his outstanding endgame prowess. However, this time Gukesh maintained his composure when it mattered the most and defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen.
