In the aftermath of the Air India flight crash in route from Ahmedabad to London, more than 60 individuals have now been identified using DNA analysis. The flight, which had 242 people on board, ended in disaster just days ago. Officials have begun handing over the bodies to the victims’ families. So far, 14 families have received the remains and have been able to perform the final rites.
Among the victims is Ex Chief Minister Vijay Rupani of Gujarat. His identity was confirmed via DNA, and preparations for his funeral in Rajkot are underway, with state leaders expected to pay their respects.
One of the deceased, Kalpana Prajapati’s family performed her last rites after receiving her body in Vadodara. To make things a little easier for grieving families, the state has started issuing death certificates right at the hospitals, so they don’t have to run around to different government offices.
At the crash site, recovery and investigation work is still going on. Teams from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), along with officials from Boeing, are going through the wreckage and collecting evidence. Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, also visited the site and got a detailed briefing from the head of the AAIB.
A significant lead in the investigation has come from a video taken by Aryan Asari, a Class 12 student. He happened to capture the moment the plane veered off course and went up in flames while still in the air. Investigators believe the video might offer some much-needed clarity about what exactly went wrong that day. Meanwhile, state ministers Harsh Sanghavi and Rushikesh Patel have assured families that support will continue. As the investigation moves forward, the grief remains heavy across Gujarat, with the crash standing out as one of the worst air tragedies the state has ever seen.
