PM Modi Begins Landmark 3-Nation Visit to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia to Strengthen Global Partnerships

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a five-day diplomatic tour on June 15, 2025, in Cyprus. He arrived in Nicosia at around 5:00 PM local time, where he was welcomed by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. This is the first visit by an Indian PM to Cyprus in 20 years – since 2002. On June 15 and 16, Modi plunged into talks with Christodoulides to raise trade, tech and defense links. He is also expected to address business people in Limassol, in the hopes to stoke further investment between the two nations. The visit is crucial in terms of India-EU and India-Mediterranean relations, especially given that Cyprus is set to preside over the EU Council in 2026. It is also a gesture of appreciation for assistance Cyprus has provided to India in the field of counter-terrorism.

June 16 – Modi flies to Kananaskis (Canada) for the G-7 Summit, at the invitation of Canadian PM Mark Carney. On June 16-17, he’ll be with world leaders discussing issues like energy, A.I. and climate challenges. This is his sixth G-7 in a row, and he is expected to hold one-on-one meetings to shore up India’s global ties. The Canada trip is particularly noteworthy, as it’s the first time he’s visited in 10 years, after a few rocky moments over Canada’s accusation, in 2023, that India was complicit in the killing of an activist. Modi’s sit-down with Carney aims to smooth things over and focus on shared goals.

June 18: Modi scripts history as he becomes the first Indian PM to visit Croatia, and lands in Zagreb to meet PM Andrej Plenkovic and President Zoran Milanovic. The conversation would be on intensifying trade, technology and cultural connectivity, as a precursor to a more robust India-Croatia relationship. Given Croatia’s involvement in projects such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, the visit has a strategic significance for India in terms of its European Union outreach. Modi concludes the trip and returns to India on June 19.

The visit is taking place soon after India’s anti-terror action in Pakistan and the Prime Minister is using it to remind nations such as Cyprus, Canada and Croatia that they are standing up for India in end of cross-border terrorism. Everything is humming along just fine with no specific hiccups, as 6:16 PM IST on June 15, 2025, is just another day of developing stronger diplomatic and economic relationships.
