US President Donald Trump said he would leave the G7 summit in order to deal with the aftermath of the tensions between Israel and Iran. One of them is the idea that the world should be worried, because what was once considered unthinkable is now a lot less so — thanks in part to recent crossfire in the Middle East (to which we currently return thanks to global attention).
As he departed the summit in Biarritz, France, President Trump said he favored diplomatic solutions to the mounting crisis. Although not explicitly endorsing particular talks, he released a warning note for Iran, advising that the country needed to take seriously the possibility of a deal to de-escalate the situation.
“The world is watching,” President Trump said, adding that he wanted to head home, to Washington DC, “to closely monitor the situation. He repeated the administration’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are preferable to war, implicitly challenging Iran to come back to the table for discussions that might defray the current impasse, added nytimes.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have added to the concerns of world leaders meeting at the G7 summit. The early departure of President Trump demonstrates the gravity the US sees in the confrontation. His message indicates a desire to concentrate on how to stave off additional escalation and find a route to peaceful resolution while maintaining pressure against the Iranians with the implicit warning.
