Jamshedpur, September 24, 2024 – Tata Steel has marked a significant leap in its commitment to sports development by unveiling a state-of-the-art chess training facility at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. The facility, inaugurated by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services, Tata Steel, alongside chess Grand Master Pravin Thipsay, represents a dedication to nurturing local talent and fostering chess excellence.

Key Features of the Facility:
  • Expanded Space: The training center now spans 150 square meters, divided into zones for beginners and advanced players.
  • Climate Control: Air conditioning units have been installed to ensure a comfortable environment conducive to focused training.
  • Office and Library: A 30 square meter space dedicated to administrative tasks and chess research has been maintained.

Inaugural Highlights:
  • Chanakya Chaudhary expressed delight at the opening, highlighting the renovation’s aim to provide a world-class training ground for aspiring chess players.
  • Mukul Vinayak Choudhari, Chief of Sports, emphasized Tata Steel’s ongoing commitment to sports excellence, seeing the chess facility as a cornerstone in promoting chess in India.
  • Chess Grand Master Pravin Thipsay commended the initiative, noting the potential of such facilities in grooming international chess talents.
Historical Context and Achievements:
  • The Chess Training Centre, established in 1989, has been instrumental in training over 4,500 cadets. It has hosted prestigious tournaments like the Tata International Open Chess and the All India FIDE Rated Special Abled Tata Steel Chess Championship, contributing significantly to Jamshedpur’s status as a sports hub.
  • The center not only focuses on chess but also integrates yoga, meditation, and physical fitness into its curriculum, promoting holistic development.
