In a statement at the Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems on August 26, 2024, in Geneva, Ambassador Anupam Ray highlighted the challenges posed by emerging technologies. He stressed India’s commitment to addressing these concerns within the framework of international humanitarian law.

The Ambassador emphasized the potential of emerging technologies in reducing poverty and improving lives, especially in developing countries, while cautioning against the stigmatization of such advancements. India expressed support for a politically binding instrument based on guiding principles to ensure responsible use of these technologies.

India also reiterated that consensus on the characterization and definitions of lethal autonomous weapons systems should be a priority for the group. India’s stance was shared on
