A dramatic turn of events unfolded at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Tuesday when a man who had been missing for four years was detained by immigration staff just as he was about to board a flight to Phuket, Thailand.
Mohammad Wajid, a resident of Perambur in Chennai, had left his home in March 2020 after suffering significant business losses. His wife, Bhamita, had filed a missing persons complaint at Thousand Lights police station in Chennai, which had been ongoing for four years.
Thanks to a lookout notice issued by Tamil Nadu police, immigration staff at the airport were able to identify and detain Wajid as he attempted to depart on an IndiGo flight. He was subsequently taken into custody and confessed to leaving his family to escape his business debts.
Wajid was reunited with his wife and nine-year-old son in Chennai the same evening, bringing an end to a four-year ordeal. According to police, Wajid had managed to pay off much of his debt during his time away and did not resist returning to his hometown.
