Jamshedpur, August 2024 – Nestled in the heart of Jamshedpur, the Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) has been a shining example of wildlife conservation and education since its inception in 1991. With a steadfast commitment to safeguarding and preserving wild flora and fauna, the zoo has been continuously evolving and restructuring to meet international standards.

Recent Developments

The zoo’s transformation began with the inauguration of a new entry plaza and fountain area on January 7, 2022, by Tata Steel MD and CEO TV Narendran. This was followed by the unveiling of new enclosures for Gharial and Mugger crocodiles on January 8, 2024, featuring a state-of-the-art water filtration plant for water conservation. The latest additions to the zoo include new homes for Hyena and Leopard, inaugurated on June 5, 2024, on World Environment Day.

Animal Care

The zoo prioritizes animal welfare, with a team of experienced veterinarians providing top-notch medical care. The animals receive regular vaccinations, deworming, and blood testing to ensure their optimal health. The zoo’s commitment to animal care is further demonstrated by its annual expenditure of approximately Rs. 800,000 on animal medicine.

Central Treatment Area (CTA)

The zoo’s Central Treatment Area is a testament to its dedication to animal care. This state-of-the-art veterinary hospital is equipped with a surgical theatre, laboratory, and diagnostic equipment, including portable X-ray and ultrasound machines. The CTA also features an incubator for unattended eggs and an LPG-based incinerator for safe disposal of animal waste and carcasses.

Upcoming Projects

The zoo is poised for further growth, with several new enclosures and facilities in the pipeline. These include:

– A Butterfly enclosure, almost complete
– A Herbivore enclosure, nearing completion
– New homes for Lion, Tiger, Zebra, and Hog deer
– CCTV coverage of the entire zoo area

Animal Exchange Program

The zoo is also engaged in an animal exchange program, aimed at promoting genetic diversity and conservation. The zoo is set to receive:

– Common Leopards from Nagpur Zoo & Rescue Centre in exchange for Blackbuck and Spotted deer
– Marsh crocodiles and Anacondas from Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in exchange for Star tortoises
