The monsoon season has started, and it has led to a number of problems in Uttarakhand. It had been facing many territorial problems because of heavy rain. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a “red alert” in the state.
Chamoli: A major landslide occurred in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, which led to the closure of Badrinath National Highway, which links pilgrims’ sites in Badrinath.

A video is widely circulating in which the massive landslide is clearly visible. A portion of the hill is falling, which has resulted in the blockage of the road. Many people were seen recording the incident on their mobile phones. People rushed in panic to seeking safety.
Another tragedy of a landslide in Karnaprayag, Chamoli district, took away lives of two people of Hyderabad. Investigation states that those people were buried under heavy rocks fallen from the hill. Their bodies were pulled out from the rocks of the landslide.
These incidents resulted in closure of Badrinath National Highway because of falling of heavy debris on the road. People on vehicles were strucked on the roads. Authorities cleared the path after the landslide occurred.
Other major landslide occurred near Joshimath on Wednesday, where the mouth of Patalganga Langsi tunnel was covered up by rubble which led to the closure of highway.

Border Road Organization (BRO) cleared the highways of Joshimath. There were over 200 excavators who removed the debris after the landslide.
Due to heavy rainfall, the number of landslides have increased which have led to many problems for the people of Uttarakhand and pilgrims who visit the state.
More than 200 roads are closed in the state due to heavy rain and massive landslides. Road connections with Badrinath, Joshimath, Niti, Mana, Tapovan, Malari, Lata, Raini, Pandukeshwar and Hemkund Sahib and many other places have been blocked due to heavy rain.
2000 travellers and pilgrims who were heading towards pilgrims’ site or returning from Badrinath temple and Hemkund Sahib remained stranded on the highways. Only the travellers or pilgrims without any vehicle (on foot) were able to cross.
The state is experiencing continuous rainfall, with many regions being more affected. The IMD had predicted heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kumaon region. Districts including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pauri, Dehradun, Tehri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital and Champawat have been warned by IMD as they are expected to experience heavy rainfall this monsoon.
Currently the Char Dham Yatra had been suspended, keeping in view the prediction of heavy rainfall in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The national highway of Rudraprayag- Kedarnath has also been blocked due to worse circumstances in the state. The commissioner of Garhwal states that the yatra has been postponed for the safety of pilgrims.
