Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to promote global cooperation in heritage conservation. India is hosting the World Heritage Committee Meeting for the first time, which will continue till July 31.

In his address, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to promoting global cooperation and engaging local communities in heritage conservation efforts. He highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage, stating that it is not just a history but also a science. The Prime Minister announced that India will contribute $1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, which will be used for capacity building, technical assistance, and conservation of world heritage sites, particularly in countries of the Global South.

PM Modi also announced that the northeast’s historic Moidam is proposed to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which will be India’s 43rd World Heritage site and the first heritage site from northeast India.

Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized the significance of the event in showcasing India’s rich culture, heritage, and diversity to international and national delegates. The meeting will discuss proposals for nominating new sites on the World Heritage list, State of Conservation reports of existing World Heritage properties, and International Assistance and Utilisation of World Heritage Funds.
