The Indian chess teams continued their impressive run at the Chess Olympiad 2024, securing commanding 3.5-0.5 victories in both the open and women’s sections in the fourth round held yesterday.
In the open section, the Indian team triumphed over Serbia. Arjun Erigaisi maintained his perfect record with a fourth consecutive win, defeating Aleksandar Indjic. World Championship challenger D. Gukesh showcased his prowess by defeating Alexandr Predke, while Vidit Gujrathi secured a win against Ivic Velimir. R Praggnanandhaa was held to a draw by Alexey Sarana. The Indian open team will face Azerbaijan in the fifth round today.
The women’s team also delivered a stellar performance against France. Harika Dronavalli, playing on board one, defeated Deimante Cornette. On board two, R. Vaishali was held to a draw by Sophie Milliet. Divya Deshmukh continued her winning streak with a victory over Mitra Hejazipour on board three, marking her fourth win of the Olympiad. Earlier, Tania Sachdev had defeated Natacha Benmesbah. The women’s team is set to face Kazakhstan in the fifth round today.
With seven rounds remaining in the Olympiad, the Indian teams are well-positioned for a strong finish.
