New Delhi, September 16, 2024 – In a swift response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi across Southeast Asia, India has initiated “Operation Sadbhav,” a humanitarian assistance mission aimed at supporting the typhoon-hit nations of Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. This operation underscores India’s commitment to regional solidarity and its ‘Act East Policy’, enhancing its role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) within the ASEAN region.
Immediate Relief Efforts
The Indian government has dispatched substantial aid to the affected regions. Notably, 10 tonnes of relief materials, including dry rations, clothing, and medicines, were sent to Myanmar aboard the Indian naval ship INS Satpura. Concurrently, an Indian Air Force military transport aircraft carried 35 tonnes of aid to Vietnam and an additional 10 tonnes to Laos. The relief package includes essential items like generators, water purification systems, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, blankets, and sleeping bags, crucial for immediate survival and recovery.
Operation Sadbhav: A Beacon of Hope
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted India’s prompt action, stating, “Our immediate response is a testament to our shared humanity and our commitment to stand by our neighbors in times of crisis.” Operation Sadbhav not only provides immediate relief but also reinforces India’s strategic and humanitarian ties with Southeast Asian countries.
Impact of Typhoon Yagi
Typhoon Yagi, declared as Asia’s most powerful storm of 2024, has left a trail of destruction, causing massive floods and landslides across Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. The storm’s aftermath has resulted in significant loss of life and property, with communities still struggling to cope with the disaster’s scale.
India’s Role in HADR
This operation is part of India’s broader initiative to bolster HADR capabilities, reflecting its growing influence and responsibility in regional affairs. By being among the first responders, India not only aids in immediate crisis management but also strengthens its diplomatic relations through acts of goodwill and cooperation.
Looking Ahead
As recovery efforts continue, Operation Sadbhav stands as a symbol of India’s dedication to fostering peace, stability, and mutual assistance in the region. The operation’s success will likely pave the way for more collaborative efforts in disaster management and relief, enhancing India’s stature as a reliable partner in Southeast Asia.
