BJP Distances Itself from Kangana Ranaut’s Controversial Call to Reinstate Farm Laws
In a significant political development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut sparked controversy with her recent remarks advocating for the reinstatement of the contentious farm laws repealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021. Her statement, made on social media, suggested that farmers should demand the laws be brought back, arguing it would be in their best interest.
The BJP was quick to distance itself from Ranaut’s comments. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified in a video statement that Ranaut’s remarks were her “personal statement” and that she was “not authorized” to speak on behalf of the party on this issue. Bhatia emphasized that the BJP disapproves of her statement, clarifying that it does not reflect the party’s stance on the farm bills.

The farm laws, introduced in September 2020, led to widespread protests across India, especially in Punjab and Haryana. The repeal of these laws came after a year of relentless demonstrations, which saw farmers blockading Delhi’s borders. The move to withdraw the laws was seen as an admission by PM Modi that the government failed to convince the farmers of the laws’ benefits.
Kangana Ranaut’s comments come at a sensitive time as Haryana heads into elections, where the BJP is already facing challenges of anti-incumbency. Her remarks have provided political fodder to the opposition, particularly the Congress, which criticized the BJP for Ranaut’s statement.
In response to the backlash, Ranaut herself clarified on her social media account that her views on the farm laws were personal and did not represent the BJP’s position.
This incident underscores the complexities of blending political office with public personas, especially in a charged issue like the farm laws, which have been a focal point of political debate and contention in India.
