Kharge criticizes Tharoor over praise for PM Modi, while Tharoor denies any intent to switch parties, calling his remarks a reflection of national interest, not political allegiance.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge didn’t restricted his words on Wednesday as he voiced his concerns at party leader Shashi Tharoor. Reacting to Tharoor’s recent article in The Hindu praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge said, “Some people seem to put Modi before the country. We say nation first, but not everyone follows that.”
He added that though Tharoor’s language is impressive— “that’s why we brought him into the working committee”—the Congress stands united with the Indian Army and the nation, not individuals.
Tharoor, in his article, had described Modi as “a prime asset for India on the global stage,” specifically in the context of Operation Sindoor, a diplomatic outreach following the Pahalgam terror attack. The article was later shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, triggering chatter about Tharoor possibly warming up to the BJP.
Kharge brushed off questions about any disciplinary action against Tharoor, saying the MP from Thiruvananthapuram was “speaking according to his wishes.” When the topic came up again later in the press meet, Kharge simply said, “We’re more concerned about saving the country.”
Tharoor, however, strongly denied any political switch. Speaking at an event, he clarified that his praise was not a sign of joining the BJP. “This is not about politics. It’s about standing together for India,” he said.
He emphasized that the article should be read as a show of unity, not a shift in loyalty. “I served at the UN for 25 years and came back to serve India,” he added, stressing his commitment to national interest over party lines.
