In a significant move to attract more foreign investment, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a dedicated Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) Outreach Cell. This initiative, part of SEBI’s Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD), aims to streamline the process for FPIs to access the Indian securities market.

The FPI Outreach Cell is designed to provide direct engagement and support to foreign investors, ensuring a seamless experience from the pre-application stage through to the onboarding phase and beyond. This includes assistance with documentation, compliance processes, and addressing any operational challenges that may arise during or after the registration process.

Key Responsibilities of the FPI Outreach Cell:

  1. Pre-Application Guidance: The cell will offer comprehensive support to prospective FPIs, helping them navigate the documentation and compliance requirements necessary for market entry.
  2. Onboarding Support: During the onboarding phase, the cell will provide continuous assistance to ensure a smooth transition into the Indian securities market.
  3. Operational Assistance: The cell will address any operational issues that FPIs may encounter, facilitating a hassle-free investment experience.

SEBI’s initiative reflects its commitment to making the Indian market more accessible and attractive to global investors. By simplifying the registration process and providing targeted support, SEBI aims to reduce barriers to entry and encourage more foreign capital inflow.

Expert Opinions: Ketan Mukhija, Senior Partner at Burgeon Law, commented, “These FPI cells are designed to provide targeted support and streamline operations for foreign investors, making it easier for them to navigate the Indian financial markets. The simplified registration process reduces barriers to entry, encouraging quicker and more efficient onboarding of FPIs.”

This strategic move by SEBI is expected to bolster market integrity and position India as a more favorable destination for foreign portfolio investments.
