Significant Decision for Senior Citizens
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision after the Cabinet meeting in Delhi, highlighting its importance. The scheme will provide free treatment up to ₹5 lakh per year for senior citizens, benefiting approximately 4.5 crore families and covering around 6 crore senior citizens across the country.
New Distinct Card for Eligible Senior Citizens
Eligible senior citizens will be issued a new distinct card under AB PM-JAY. Those aged 70 and above, belonging to families already covered under AB PM-JAY, will receive an additional top-up cover of ₹5 lakh per year for themselves. All other senior citizens in this age group will get a cover of ₹5 lakh per year on a family basis.
Options for Existing Beneficiaries
Senior citizens aged 70 and above who are already availing benefits of other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), can choose to continue with their existing scheme or opt for AB PM-JAY. Additionally, those under private health insurance policies or the Employees’ State Insurance scheme will also be eligible to avail benefits under AB PM-JAY.
