Calm was gradually returning to Bangladesh after the one week of violence and disturbances. For instance, while citing the situation that having restricted everyone’s movements on Friday, on Tuesday they eased the curfew by allowing free movement for seven hours for people to carry out their activities. Shops, restaurants, offices, garment factories, banks, and stock exchanges and others have resumed their businesses and people are back to work.
Though the curfew has been relaxed and the broadband internet connection has been restored to some parts of Bangladesh including diplomatic and business districts people of Bangladesh are happy. But interestingly, social networking sites such as Face book and You tube are still banned.
The unrest that started last Thursday claimed the lives of at least 160 people among which 3 journalists and several policemen. Ten of thousands suffered bruises and other injuries, many of them continue to be hospitalised.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina blames Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami group and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for attempting terrorist activities during the curfew. More th an 2500 people, including opposition activists and leaders, have been arrested in the country in the four subsequent days.
With the use of armed forces, one cannot but agree that there are few cases of violent confrontation and the situation gradually stabilizes. But Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced that soldiers are also going to maintain their patrolling on the streets until and unless normalcy comes back to the country.
