Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Dana’ Set to Make Landfall on Odisha Coast, High Alert Issued
BHUBANESWAR, Odisha – The severe cyclone ‘Dana’, currently positioned 280 km from Paradip and 310 km from Dhamra, is set to make landfall along the Odisha coast tonight between Bhitarkanika and Dhamra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted wind speeds of 100-120 km/h during its landfall, with the storm’s impact expected to persist into early tomorrow morning.
Impact Zones
The districts of Kendrapara, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jagatsinghpur, and Bhadrak are bracing for the worst, with forecasts of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Nine other districts in Odisha are also under alert for heavy rainfall. The approaching cyclone is expected to disrupt normal life significantly, with potential flooding and wind damage.
Precautionary Measures
In response to the looming threat, all educational institutions and many government offices will remain closed until further notice. The state government has initiated the evacuation of residents from vulnerable, low-lying areas to multipurpose cyclone shelters to ensure safety. Moreover, leaves for medical staff and government employees have been suspended to bolster emergency services.
Transportation and Travel
The cyclone has led to the cancellation of all flights to and from Biju Patnaik International Airport from 5 PM today until 9 AM tomorrow. Similarly, numerous passenger train services have been halted as a precautionary measure, and fishing activities have been prohibited in the sea areas off the Odisha coast.
