Congress Criticizes Modi Government Over Indian Student’s U.S. Deportation, Urges Immediate Action

New Delhi – The Congress party on Tuesday came down heavily on the Modi government over what it described as a growing pattern of mistreatment of Indian citizens, especially students, in the United States, accusing the Prime Minister of staying silent during a time when intervention is needed most.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced his criticism after a troubling video from Newark Airport began making rounds online. The clip, shared on Monday by Indian American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, shows a visibly distressed Indian student restrained in handcuffs on the floor just moments before his deportation from the U.S. The student, crying and helpless, has sparked outrage on social media and raised concerns about the treatment of Indian nationals abroad.

“Indian students and citizens in the U.S. have faced repeated mistreatment over the past year, yet Prime Minister Modi remains silent. One must wonder—is it indifference, or a lack of will to raise his voice?” Ramesh expressed his concerns in a post on X, which was earlier known as Twitter.

Ramesh also called for urgent diplomatic engagement, urging PM Modi to speak directly to former U.S. President Donald Trump and seek immediate intervention. “It is the Prime Minister’s most important responsibility to protect the honour and dignity of India and Indians,” he added.

The Congress leader further charged that the Modi administration has continuously failed to provide protection for Indian nationals abroad.   In reference to a purported erosion of India’s diplomatic standing, Ramesh said that “for the very first time in history, a foreign head of state announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan without India’s involvement.”

The case has spurred a fresh conversation regarding India’s foreign policy objectives, particularly in relation to protecting its citizens abroad.
