Deadly Bombing in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Kills 16 Soldiers; Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group Claims Responsibility

In Pakistan, there was a massive bomb attack in June 28, 2025 in an area called North Waziristan. It resulted in sixteen fatalities (soldiers) and the injury of over 24 others including civilians. A violent militant group on the Pakistani Taliban known as the Hafeez Gul Bahadur faction claimed to be the ones behind the attack and again threatened of continuing the problem of insurgency in the border areas.

The attack began shortly after 8 a.m. in the North Waziristan district of Datta Khel, one of the most unruly districts in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along the Afghanistan border. One suicide bomber in a car loaded with explosives attacked a military patrol in remote highway. The explosion left two army cars destroyed and houses near the area damaged resulting in the high number of deaths. The shockwave and flying debris injured the civilians including women and children.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur group; a splinter group of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) organized the attack as a part of its war on Pakistan state. The group aims at making the government unstable, replenishing its extremist ideology, and eliminating military forces, which the group considers as being a part of the counter-terrorism activities. Its activities reflect frustration of the presence of Pakistan in tribal areas and alienations towards external powers. The militant activity along the porous border has also been boosted by regional changes such as the Taliban who took over Afghanistan.

The recent attack took place in North Waziristan which has been a stronghold of the militant groups since long time ago. It is a strategic location suitable to insurgents as there are mountains and that it is bordering the territory of Afghanistan and this is difficult to be monitored by soldiers. With the increased patrols and checking points, the bomber succeeded, and it could be that the knowledge of the ground which the locals had or of the security plans aided him to be successful.

It involved the use of vehicle-borne explosive device, which is an approach commonly employed by the members of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction to inflict maximum casualties. The bomber blew the car at the time when a military convoy was passing thereby inflicting immense damage. The site was later cordoned off by security agencies and injured rushed to the local hospitals where some are still in critical condition. The strike has brought about the new round of discussion of the faulty intelligence and the necessity to increase the surveillance to prevent such an event in the future.

This is a tragedy that indicates how difficult it has been on the part of Pakistan to overcome militancy on the border. The death of 16 soldiers and the injurties that were experienced among the civilians show the human cost of the war as the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction continues to exploit the weak spots in North Waziristan. To prevent further loss of lives caused by more incidents of this nature, urgent measures need to be taken to ensure that security is enhanced and border coordination between countries should be enhanced and the root causes of militancy addressed to prevent such occurrences.
