A couple was arrested by Pune police for allegedly assaulting a woman who was travelling on a scooter with her two kids. The incident took place on Saturday when a man named Swapnil Kekre, got extremely angry for not getting a chance to overtake the assaulted woman, Jerlyn D’Silva, a digital content creator.
The content creator, Jerlyn, posted a video on Instagram detailing the incident. In her post, she stated that she was on the Pashan-Baner Link Road on a scooter with her two children. Swapnil Kekre, had been speeding his car behind them for nearly two kilometers.
D’Silva said in the posted video, “An old man was following us for two kilometers. He was overspeeding, and he took a left turn to intercept me, and then got out of the car furiously. He punched me twice and pulled my hair right in front of the kids. He didn’t care about the kids. I want to ask how safe the city is. Why are people behaving like maniacs? I want this man to be punished for what he did to me.”
She also added, “I had two kids with me, Kuch bhi ho sakta tha (anything could have happened).”
After the video went viral all over the internet, Pune Police received input and lodged an FIR against the man under various sectors of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Pune Police arrested the man along with his wife, who was with him at the time of the incident.
Jerlyn’s uncle, Vishal, told NDTV, that he visited her at the hospital. She told him that the man attacked her for no reason. The scooter didn’t even touch the car, he did this only to show his power.
Vishal, also stated that the man was accompanied by his wife, who did not intervene while he was assaulting Jerlyn. “The children weren’t physically harmed but were scared and screaming.”
“The case has been registered at Chaturshrungi Police Station, and further investigations are underway,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vijayakumar Magar.
