The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, has resigned amid protests from medical students and house staff over the rape and murder of a second-year PGT doctor. Ghosh claimed he was a victim of a political conspiracy and appealed to protesters to withdraw their demonstrations and resume normal operations at the hospital. However, protesters continue to demand action, seeking a fully functioning student union, precedence for RG Kar students in house staff counseling, a revised Hostel Development Committee, and expansion of the Girls’ Hostel.

Earlier, Bengal Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the tragedy for further investigation. The state health department has already announced the transfer of the erstwhile medical superintendent and vice principal of the college, Dr. Sanjay Vashisth.
