Kolkata, West Bengal – Relentless heavy rainfall has thrown life in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, into complete disarray. On September 23, 2025, a cloudburst triggered nearly five hours of torrential downpour, leaving the city grappling with severe conditions.
The rain has caused widespread waterlogging in several parts of Kolkata, with low-lying areas facing flood-like situations. Roads have turned into rivers, bringing traffic to a standstill. Neighboring districts around Kolkata are also reeling, with daily life coming to a halt. Markets are deserted, and schools and colleges have shut down.
Tragically, the downpour has claimed several lives. Most deaths have been caused by electrocution from fallen power lines, spreading panic across the city. Locals are avoiding stepping out, fearing for their safety. The electricity department has urged people to stay cautious, but the non-stop rain is making things worse.
The heavy rainfall has crippled transportation across the board. Metro services have been suspended due to submerged tracks in low-lying areas. Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway have canceled or delayed multiple trains in the Howrah and Sealdah divisions. At the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Dumdum, several flights were canceled, while others faced significant delays, leaving passengers stranded.
The weather department has warned of more heavy rain in the coming days. The administration is ramping up relief efforts, but the situation remains dire. Residents are hoping for a break in the weather to bring some normalcy back to the city.
