Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death for her alleged involvement in the violent crackdown on student protests last year. The verdict was delivered by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), which found her guilty of crimes against humanity. Hasina was tried in absentia and currently lives in exile in New Delhi, India.

Following the verdict, international organizations including the UN voiced concern over the death penalty, calling for fair trial standards and due process. India’s Ministry of External Affairs released a statement, expressing commitment to peace, democracy, and stability in Bangladesh, but stopped short of committing to Hasina’s extradition. The tribunal also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, while the former police chief received a five-year sentence after turning state witness.

Sheikh Hasina has dismissed the charges, calling the tribunal biased and politically motivated. She stated that the interim government is targeting her to suppress the Awami League and divert attention from current national issues. Security has been tightened in Dhaka following the verdict due to ongoing protests and violence.
