Dhanbad witnessed a powerful display of faith on Makar Sankranti as people ignored the intense cold to take a holy dip in the Damodar and Barakar rivers. The festival, which marks the sun’s northward journey, brought energy and joy across the region.
Even with freezing temperatures and strong chilly winds, crowds started gathering early in the morning at the ghats. Mohalbani on the Damodar river became the main spot where people took their sacred bath as soon as the first rays of sunlight appeared. After the dip, many visited nearby temples to offer prayers. They also gave donations like sesame-jaggery mix, khichdi, and warm clothes to seek blessings for good health and wealth.
Authorities made good arrangements to handle the large crowds. A temporary medical camp and ambulance were set up near the ghats by Chasnala community health center. Police from Sudamdih ensured smooth traffic by creating separate parking areas so everyone could reach the riverside easily.
Security was tight with the district administration on high alert. Local police teams, including officers from Jharia area, stayed at the ghats from early morning. Announcements were made through loudspeakers warning people not to go into deep water. Barricades were placed in the river, and experienced divers kept watch from boats to prevent any mishaps.
This mix of strong belief and careful safety measures made the celebration peaceful and meaningful. The festivities in the coalfield area will continue until Thursday. The administration has asked everyone to enjoy the festival while following safety rules.
