Sheikh Hasina Slams Interim Govt Over Awami League Ban Ahead of Polls

NEW DELHI – Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has launched a sharp attack on the current interim government. Speaking from her self-exile, she criticized the decision to suspend the Awami League just weeks before the national elections scheduled for February 12.

“Elections Without Us Are a Mockery”

In a recent address, Hasina stated that keeping the country’s largest and oldest political party out of the race makes the upcoming vote “illegal and biased.” She argued that by preventing the Awami League from campaigning or contesting, the administration led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is taking away the voting rights of millions of citizens.

“A party that led the nation to independence cannot be silenced like this,” she said. Hasina claimed the interim government is “afraid of the people’s mandate” and is trying to clear the field to ensure a specific outcome.

Concerns Over Stability

The former PM also raised alarms about the law and order situation in Bangladesh. She pointed out that since her departure in August 2024, the country has seen rising violence and a lack of safety for minorities. She urged her supporters to remain united and called for an impartial investigation into the recent political unrest.

As the February 12 election date nears, the exclusion of the Awami League remains a hot topic, with many questioning if the polls will be truly inclusive without all major parties on the ballot.
