External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar today met with Maldives’ Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, marking her first official visit to India. The high-level talks focused on deepening the multi-dimensional partnership between the two nations and reviewing progress on key developmental projects.
Prioritizing the Neighborhood
Underscoring India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated New Delhi’s steadfast commitment to the prosperity and development of the Maldives. “Reviewed our bilateral cooperation and discussed shared priorities that benefit the people of both nations,” the Minister noted following the meeting.
A Roadmap for Economic Growth
The visiting Foreign Minister expressed optimism regarding the strengthening of people-to-people ties and longstanding strategic cooperation. A significant highlight of the discussions included the intent to fast-track the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026. Both sides also explored advancing the Bilateral Investment Treaty and promoting trade settlements in local currencies.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, signaling a period of renewed trust and accelerated collaboration in sectors ranging from digital payments to maritime security.
