Traffic Stops at Qazigund | Flights Cancelled | IMD Warns of Thunder, Hail and Strong Winds
Srinagar, January 27: Heavy snowfall has caused big trouble in Kashmir. Thousands of vehicles are stuck on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after thick snow covered the roads. Traffic has come to a complete stop near Qazigund, leaving many people waiting in their cars for hours.
The snow started falling heavily from early morning. Soon the road became slippery and unsafe for driving. People say they have been stuck since last night in some places. Drivers are worried about food, fuel and staying warm in the cold.
Many flights to and from Srinagar airport were cancelled today because of bad weather. Airlines told passengers to check updates before coming to the airport. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the next few days. They said thunderstorms, hail and sudden strong winds can hit the area anytime.
Local authorities are working to clear the snow with machines and teams. They are asking people not to travel on the highway unless it is very important. Hotels and roadside dhabas near Qazigund are full with people looking for a warm place to rest.
This is not the first time heavy snow has blocked the highway in winter. Many people remember similar problems every year. Authorities say they are doing their best to open the road soon, but it may take time depending on how much more snow falls.
Stay safe if you are planning to travel in this area. Check the weather and road updates before leaving home.
