April 15, 2024 – The Indian National Congress has released its list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with notable entries including former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar, who will contest from the North East Delhi constituency.
Kanhaiya Kumar, a prominent figure in Indian politics, is set to face off against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sitting MP Manoj Tiwari in what is expected to be a closely watched battle. The contest in North East Delhi is particularly significant due to the substantial migrant population from Bihar, which both candidates are connected to.
In addition to Kumar, the Congress has fielded other key figures in Delhi: J P Agarwal will represent the party in Chandni Chowk, while Udit Raj has been nominated for the North West Delhi seat. The party’s strategy reflects a mix of experience and new political vigor as it aims to make a strong showing in the national capital.
Moving to Punjab, the Congress list includes former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who will run from the Jalandhar constituency. Other candidates from Punjab include Gurjeet Singh Aujla from Amritsar, Amar Singh from Fatehgarh Sahib, Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu from Bhatinda, Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Sangrur, and Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi from Patiala.
The Congress party’s announcement comes at a time when the political landscape of India is highly dynamic, with alliances and rivalries shaping the electoral battleground. The selection of candidates reflects the party’s broader electoral strategy and its efforts to connect with diverse voter demographics across the country.
