India’s number one singles player Sumit Nagal earned an excellent win at the Nordea Open happening in Bastad, Sweden. Nagal emerged victorious in the match, the previous two matches they had been on a losing side, but they managed to pull up their socks and won the match against the talented Swedish wild card entrant, Elias Ymer in straight sets. In the just concluded match, the score was 6-4, 6-3.

This victory can be considered quite special for Nagal since he had losses to Ymer in the Split Open in Croatia last year and the tournament in Lyon, France in 2019. His recent outputs of good performances has not only helped him increase his ATP singles ranking but also for him to qualify in the singles category in the Paris Olympics. Nagal now has ATP ranking of 68 after previously reaching 71 as his best ranking so far. With this accomplishment, he ranks fourth in rank of the Indian man since 1973; Vijay Amritraj, Ramesh Krishnan, Somdev Devvarman.
Having played in the French open and being the only Indian in men’s singles for the Paris games, Nagal has 779 ATP points. In the next round, he will possibly meet world number 36 Mariano Navone of Argentina. In case each of the players beats his opponent in the earlier rounds, they face each other in the quarter-final round. At the same time, the Indian doubles team of Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji are to take part in their first ATP tour event at the Hamburg Open 500.
This new beginning of Sumit Nagal also throws open the prospects of his further matches as also the marvelous part that he is going to participate in the Paris Olympics for India.
