A fresh political storm is brewing over the Kolkata Law College gang rape case, with BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya questioning how one of the accused, Zaib Ahmed, even got into college.
On Monday, Malviya took to social media platform X, alleging that Zaib was admitted to South Calcutta Law College—despite scoring a shockingly low rank of 2634 in CULET-UG 2024. “Who let him in?” Malviya asked. “Who’s protecting him?”
According to him, far more deserving students are being denied seats while “criminals” are quietly ushered in. The college, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, is considered one of the better-known institutions in the state.
“Welcome to Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal,” Malviya said in a sharp dig at the ruling party. He accused the TMC government of “mocking the rule of law” and damaging institutions to shield those with political backing.
Zaib Ahmed is one of three men arrested in the June 25 gang rape of a 24-year-old law student. The prime accused, Manojit Mishra, reportedly proposed marriage to the woman earlier. When she declined, things turned dark.
Mishra allegedly dragged her into the guard room on campus and raped her. The guard, as per the FIR, was told to wait outside. Meanwhile, the other two—Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee—stood by and recorded the assault.
The case has triggered massive outrage, both for the crime and the alleged institutional neglect. Now, with political accusations flying and troubling questions over college admissions, the controversy is only deepening.
