Moscow, December 23, 2025 – A powerful explosion rocked a quiet residential area in southern Moscow yesterday morning, claiming the life of a top Russian military figure. Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a seasoned officer in charge of training operations for the armed forces, lost his life when a bomb hidden under his car went off.

The blast happened around 7 a.m. on Yasenevaya Street, as the 56-year-old general was starting his day. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries from shrapnel and fractures, but sadly, he didn’t make it. Investigators quickly arrived at the scene, where a white Kia Sorento was left mangled, with doors blown off and nearby cars damaged too.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened in the capital. In fact, it’s the third attack on a high-ranking officer in just over a year. Back in December 2024, another general fell victim to a similar bomb hidden on a scooter outside his home. And earlier this year, in April, yet another senior military man was killed in a car explosion near Moscow.

Sarvarov had a long career in the military. He fought in tough conflicts back in the 1990s, including in Chechnya, and later helped direct operations in Syria around 2015-2016. He had been leading the operational training department since 2016, playing a key role in preparing troops.

Russian officials are treating this as a targeted murder and are looking into illegal explosives. They’re pointing fingers at possible involvement from Ukrainian services, though there’s no word yet from the other side. President Putin was told about it right away, and the Kremlin called it a terrible act.

These kinds of incidents raise big questions about security in the heart of Russia, especially with the ongoing tensions from the war in Ukraine. People in Moscow are on edge, wondering if more could come. For now, the investigation is ongoing, and everyone hopes for answers soon.

It’s a grim reminder of how far-reaching conflicts can get, hitting even the top brass at home.
