Begusarai, Bihar – In a bold move against corruption, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau arrested Ranjit Shankar Prasad, a Cooperative Extension Officer, for accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. The incident took place near a hotel at Zero Mile in Begusarai on September 24, 2025.
The case began when Akhilesh Kumar Sumit, the PACS (Primary Agricultural Credit Society) chairman of Rasidpur Panchayat in Bachhwara block, applied to build a godown at his PACS building. He submitted his application to the District Cooperative Officer, but Ranjit Shankar Prasad demanded ₹25,000 to process it. When Akhilesh refused to pay, the officer lowered the bribe to ₹10,000, insisting that the application wouldn’t move forward without payment.
Frustrated, Akhilesh lodged a written complaint with the Vigilance Department in Patna on September 15. The department, led by DSP Shriram Chaudhary, verified the complaint and planned a sting operation. On the day of the arrest, Ranjit was returning from official duty at a governor’s event in Simaria. As he accepted the ₹10,000 (in ₹500 notes) near the Zero Mile hotel, the vigilance team swooped in and caught him red-handed.
The officer has been taken to the Circuit House for questioning, and legal proceedings are underway. This arrest has sparked discussions among locals, who hope such actions will clean up the system.
