Kuala Lumpur, December 22 – Foreign ministers from Southeast Asian countries are coming together today in Malaysia’s capital for important talks. The main goal is to stop the deadly clashes along the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
This will be the first time leaders from both countries sit face to face since the fighting started again on December 8. Malaysia, which is leading the group of Southeast Asian nations called ASEAN this year, hopes these discussions will lead to a strong and lasting stop to the violence.
The United States has also called on both sides to end the fights and follow the peace agreement signed earlier in Kuala Lumpur.
The fresh round of clashes this month has been very sad. Officials say at least 22 people have died in Thailand and 19 in Cambodia. More than 900,000 people have had to leave their homes on both sides, looking for safety.
These new fights broke a short-lived peace that came after five days of heavy clashes in July. That earlier truce was helped by the US, China, and Malaysia.
Everyone hopes today’s meeting brings real calm to the region. People on both sides just want to go back to normal life without fear.
