Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – In a devastating series of events, six people have lost their lives due to separate landslides in Cox’s Bazar district late Thursday night and early Friday morning. Among the deceased, three members of the same family perished in a landslide at the Ukhiya Rohingya camp on Friday.

Persistent heavy rainfall since Wednesday has led to severe waterlogging in over fifty villages, including the district town. The torrential rains have inundated several hundred shops and thousands of houses, causing widespread disruption and damage. The Additional District Magistrate of Cox’s Bazar reported that large cracks have appeared on more than 12 hills within the city, with multiple reports of hill slides in various parts of the area.

Details of the Incidents

The first incident occurred in the Dikkul area under Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, where Akhi Moni, 26, and her two daughters, Miha Jannat Naima and Latifa Islam, were buried under the mud. Despite rescue efforts, only Mizan, the husband and father, was found alive.

In a separate incident at the Ukhiya Rohingya camp, three brothers, Abdur Rahim, Abdul Hafez, and Abdul Wahed, lost their lives when a landslide destroyed their home. The continuous heavy rain has softened the soil, leading to these tragic landslides.

Impact on the Community

The heavy rains have caused significant waterlogging, affecting more than fifty villages and the district town. Several hundred shops and thousands of houses have been inundated, leading to severe disruptions in daily life. The local authorities have been working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected families.

Government Response

The government has been actively monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance to the affected areas. The Additional District Magistrate of Cox’s Bazar has assured that efforts are being made to prevent further incidents and to support the victims’ families.
