Rajnath Singh Unveils Coin for Karunanidhi’s Centenary, Hails His Contributions to National Unity and Social Justice
Chennai, August 18: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled a commemorative coin in Chennai to mark the birth centenary of M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Describing Karunanidhi as a titan of Indian politics, Singh praised his contributions as a revered leader, adept administrator, advocate for social justice, and cultural icon.
Singh highlighted Karunanidhi’s commitment to national unity, emphasizing that despite his deep Tamil roots, he championed a balanced distribution of power within the Union, reflecting his dedication to federalism and India’s diverse identity. He noted that Karunanidhi’s leadership underscored the importance of accommodating diverse voices within a unified national framework.

The Raksha Mantri lauded Karunanidhi for his efforts in advancing democratic principles and social equity. Singh pointed out Karunanidhi’s pioneering work in gender equality and support for marginalized communities, including the implementation of 33% reservation for women in local bodies and the formation of Women Self Help Groups. His establishment of welfare boards for unorganized sector workers, including agricultural laborers and transgender individuals, was highlighted as a testament to his commitment to improving the lives of the vulnerable.
Singh also commended Karunanidhi’s administrative skills, noting his initiative, ‘Manu Nidhi Thittam,’ which mandated district officials to dedicate one day each week to addressing public grievances. He emphasized Karunanidhi’s focus on education and infrastructure development, asserting that his vision extended beyond Tamil Nadu to contribute to national progress.
