Kolkata, August 20, 2024 – In the wake of the tragic death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shehzad Poonawalla has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Poonawalla’s call for resignation follows statements made by the parents of the deceased doctor, who have accused the state government of failing to protect their daughter and seeking justice.
Parents’ Allegations and Criticism of the Government
The parents of the deceased doctor have voiced their dissatisfaction with the handling of the case, alleging that the police did not perform their duties properly and that the Chief Minister is attempting to suppress protests. The mother of the deceased doctor recounted the distressing events leading up to the discovery of her daughter’s body, describing how they were initially informed that their daughter was sick, only to later learn that she had allegedly committed suicide. Upon arriving at the hospital, the family was not allowed to see her body for several hours. The mother described the condition of her daughter’s body, which led her to believe that it was not a suicide but a murder.
BJP Leader’s Statement
Speaking to ANI, Poonawalla stated, “After the statement from the parents of the deceased doctor in the Kolkata case, if Mamata Banerjee has any morality left, she should resign. The parents’ statement makes it clear that Mamata Banerjee’s government is not interested in protecting daughters or seeking justice for them; their priority is to protect the rapists, destroy evidence, suppress those who speak the truth, and conceal the facts.” He further questioned the West Bengal government, asking what secrets they were trying to hide and stating that “the parents were misled from the very first day.”
Supreme Court’s Involvement
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra set to hear the case on August 20. The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on August 9, sparking nationwide strikes and demands for severe punishment for the accused.
Investigation and Arrests
The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. However, the Calcutta High Court, expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s investigation, has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe. The CBI is now handling the investigation, and the Supreme Court’s involvement has added a new dimension to the case.
Public Outcry and Protests
The incident has triggered widespread protests and strikes across the country, with many demanding justice for the deceased doctor and accountability from the state government. The imposition of Section 144 by the Chief Minister to prevent protests has further fueled public anger.
As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the Supreme Court’s hearing and the CBI’s investigation to ensure justice is served for the deceased doctor and her family.
