Manipur Drug Crackdown: Rs. 55 Crore Worth of Heroin and Opium Seized in Multi-Agency Raid

In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in the Northeastern region, authorities seized contraband drugs and cash worth around Rs. 55.52 crore during a joint operation in Manipur. The operation, called “Operation White Veil,” took place from June 5 to 7 and involved a joint effort by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Customs, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police along the border areas of Churachandpur District.

Authorities obtained 7,755.75 grams of heroin with an estimated street value of Rs. 54.29 crore, along with 6,736 grams of opium believed to be worth around Rs. 87.57 lakh. with this, cash totalling Rs. 35.63 lakh was seized. The operation also resulted in the confiscation of two Baofeng Walkie-Talkies and one Maruti Eeco Van. All five individuals were taken into custody under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.

The breakthrough came early on June 6 when two suspects traveling in a Maruti Eeco Van near Behiang Village, close to the Myanmar border, were followed discreetly. This led the police to a residence in Thadou Veng, Singngat Sub-Division, where they found 219 soap cases of heroin and a lot of opium packets. One individual was taken into custody at the residence, while two more were detained at Bualkot Check Gate after trying to get away. Further searches at another accused’s residence in Behiang Village uncovered more opium and cash.

The operation continued the next day with the interception of two individuals carrying improvised manpacks near Zoukhonuam Village, where 440 soap cases of heroin were seized. The first investigations by the authorities found that the narcotics were trafficked across the porous Indo-Myanmar border through wooded regions.

However, despite the challenging terrain and risks involved, the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies led to this important seizure. Under the NDPS Act, anyone who break the law can go to jail for up to 10 years. This operation marks a strong move in curbing drug trafficking in the region.
